NARCO CLOSEHOLD: Neither Over Nor On in Algeria

By Geoff D. Porter

Although it would seem to be either over or on in Algeria, it is likely neither. The weekly demonstrations are continuing and arrests are mounting. Dialogue has stalled and the electoral process is proceeding. The government has seemingly determined its course and it is going to stick to it. The demonstration movement has determined its course too. And it is going to stick to it. A collision seems imminent, suggesting that someone wins and someone loses. Someone gives and someone gets. But if what’s past is prologue, then Algeria is never zero-sum. To the contrary, there are layers, there are accommodations, seen and unseen, there are protracted timelines. Algeria is nothing if not indefinite.
