It’s Algeria’s moment for the taking.
Sort of.
The unrelated crises in Ukraine and Mali afford Algeria the opportunity to play the role on the international stage to which it always aspires – stability’s non-violent, impartial broker.
With the government in Bamako having announced the expulsion of France’s ambassador to Mali on 31 January 2022 and the possibility that Russia will sever gas supplies to Europe if Brussels slaps Moscow with sanctions over its Ukrainian maneuvers, Algeria has the chance to rally itself again and play a critical role mitigating the worst negative impacts of these two developments.
