What a week! The government in Algeria seems to be changing up its tactics. After 30 weeks of playing rope-a-dope, the government is coming out swinging against the demonstration movement with a triple combination.
- The government leaked that it is considering dismissing Prime Minister Noureddine Bedoui and possibly other members of his cabinet;
- The government then arrested prominent Hirak participant Karim Tabbou;
- The government then announced that it would end the 51/49 investment law.
Not quite a KO (and it’s hard to imagine Army Chief of Staff Ahmed Gaid Salah ever floating like a butterfly), but it’s the strongest combo the government has thrown so far and its opponents are on their back feet.
