Morocco’s making hay while the sun shines.
It has embraced a more aggressive and more insistent foreign policy, aiming to consolidate strategic gains made in the last several years. The most important of these is obviously the US’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara. More broadly, Morocco has made diplomatic strides in Sub-Saharan Africa and it is intent not to see those challenged by other aspiring regional players.
Rabat’s current dispute with Spain and its earlier, but ongoing, spat with Berlin are just the most recent instances of the Makhzen flexing its muscle.
