NARCO ANALYSIS: Algeria's Energy Stars Align

November 10, 2022

By Geoff D. Porter

According to MEES, Algeria is potentially planning an oil and gas licensing round for spring 2023. The timing might just be right for Algeria to knock the cover off the ball. Algeria’s last licensing round was in September 2014, and it was a massive flop. But that was years ago and a world away.

Algeria is hot right now due to the disruption of Russian gas supplies to Europe; it has a new hydrocarbons law; it’s more politically stable than it's been in years; and January will mark ten years since the calamitous In Amenas terrorist attack (إِنَّا ِلِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ).

Taken together, circumstances may align for Algeria to pull off a successful bid round.
