I left my loafers at a cobbler’s in Algiers. The heel had worn out and needed to be replaced. Discussing my shoes, the conversation wandered. “I just want people to see Algeria as normal,” the shoemaker said.
It’s not just people like the cobbler who want Algeria to be seen like anywhere else, it’s the government too.
Some Algerian decisionmakers recognize that current circumstances present Algeria with unprecedented opportunities. In order to seize those opportunities, it needs to dispel the fantasies and fears that persist about Algeria and show that it is in many ways a normal country.
