NARCO ANALYSIS: Algeria O&G Bid Round

October 15, 2024

As expected, Algeria launched an oil and gas licensing round yesterday during the NAPEC energy conference in Oran. The announcement signals the return of Algeria’s upstream after a decade of doldrums. But it’s also not without its problems, which ironically were created by Algeria itself over the last several years.

But first a recap – Algeria hasn’t had a bid round in more than a decade. That round in 2014 was a dud. As NARCO wrote at the time, “Initial observations note that the majority of the round’s blocks are unattractive, raising speculation that the round is likely to replicate the anemic results of its predecessors.” The 2014 round ended up awarding only four out of the 31 blocks offered. Dud indeed.

But that was a different time.
